Can The Aroma Of Essential Oils Change How We Feel?
Have you ever felt angry, frustrated or just totally down and tried to suppress or change those feelings or tried to make yourself not feel that way?
Let’s face it, nobody wants to be around Debbie Downer or someone who is angry. So, as a society we tend to hide or suppress those negative emotions and hide them at all cost. We put on a brave face or a fake smile but long term that’s both unhealthy and impossible to sustain. Being able to feel is what makes us human. We can feel excitement, sadness, happiness, fear, loneliness, joy, or anger. They are all just feelings that we are naturally wired to experience. There’s nothing wrong with any of them, they are all perfectly normal.
However, constantly feeling negative emotions, feeling anxious, angry, sad, or frustrated can have a negative impact not only on our health but also our quality of life. It can ruin relationships and friendships, cause resentment and problems at work and within families.
As a result, dealing with those emotions and managing our moods has become a priority for a lot of people. But, what’s the most effective way to do it? Exercise and meditation are definitely very helpful. What about positive thinking? I always get a kick out of this push for positive thinking. You know all those quotes that make you feel good for about 10 seconds. Just think positive and everything will be ok.
But, have you found yourself in a situation where you try to tell yourself to calm down or not be angry and it didn’t really work? Trying to impose happy thoughts or trying to stop yourself from being angry is extremely difficult and may actually compound stress. The reason for that is that our prefrontal cortex, the logical part of the brain responsible for thinking and complex reasoning, the one that we use when we try to tell ourselves to stop worrying is not connected to our limbic system.
The limbic system is also called our “emotional brain”, a part of the brain where our emotions, motives and memories are stored. However, our olfactory system (our sense of smell) has direct access to it and for that reason just by smelling essential oils, we can trigger feelings of calm, peace or joy.
Essential oils can’t make us feel happy all the time, wouldn’t the world be a magical place if that were possible? However, they can give us time to step back in order to process and face our emotions.
Sometimes, just a talk with a good friend or a night out with the girls (or guys for all my male followers), is all we need.
