This week we are going camping.  Never in my life did I think I would go camping.  I never saw the appeal in sleeping in a tent, in the woods, amongst all the bugs.  I still don’t.  However, we are going with a bunch of our friends and one of my favorite things to do is hang out with my friends.  Also, my little guy gets to hang out with his friends as well, so despite the fact that I will need to sleep in a tent, I’m sure it will be a lot of fun because, did I already mention that we all get to hang out with our friends?

Interestingly, there is an option to rent a bungalow which I really wanted to do but I succumbed to peer pressure.  There are points in life where you realize there’s nothing you can do, and it would be pointless to even try to stress out about it.  It’s like banging your head against a wall.  What we can do, is make the best of the situation and have fun.

My main objection to camping is dealing with all the bugs, mostly ticks.  One year we found a tick on my little guy in February!  I know that February seems like a weird time but the weather just suddenly got warm for a few days and it had already been a mild winter.  It just didn’t cross my mind to apply bug spray on him while he was playing outside.  I learned my lesson though.  I will be ready this time!!

My main defense will be a bug spray that I’ll be making with essential oils.  We’ve been using oils as a bug repellant for a few years now as a natural way to protect ourselves and found them to be very effective.  The CDC confirmed that Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil is as effective as DEET!  Research has shown essential oils to be effective natural repellents.  Based on experience, you might need to re-apply every 3-4 hours.  I will make one to apply on the skin and one for our clothing.

I’m using four essential oils at 5% dilution, 60 drops for 2oz bottle and 240 drops for 8oz bottle. You can use this for kids 5 years and older.

1. FOR USE ON SKIN

In a 2oz bottle combine

10 drops Citronella

14 drops Lemon Eucalyptus

23 drops Lavender

13 drops Cedarwood

Top it off with jojoba oil or any other carrier oil of your choice. I like jojoba because it absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave skin feeling greassy.

2. FOR USE ON CLOTHING

In a 8oz spray bottle combine

40 drops Citronella

54 drops Lemon Eucalyptus

93 drops Lavender

53 drops Cedarwood

Add 1/4 cup of Everclear and fill it up with filtered water.
